It put the “challenge” in “writing challenge.”

The challenge put forth was to write a story based on the major arcana of the traditional Rider-Waite Tarot deck. To draw a card for each chapter and somehow include the meaning of the card or something in the symbology or picture on the card in the chapter. Really just to include any representation somehow related to the card, even in a basic way.

For those unfamiliar with the tomfoolery some consider the tarot, this means I am to write 22 chapters altogether. At the rate I’m going, the book should be done in August or September. If things get crazy at work, it might be October, so of course it would be a Halloween finale…which kind of changes some things in my mind regarding where the book could go. Interesting…

I’m only three chapters in thus far and it has already been a great challenge. I’ve been working on one of my books for years now, I don’t even want to say how many. I will say it’s research heavy and this challenge is all for fun, but as a perfectionist, it’s been interesting trying to write a story of this scale on a schedule.

Sure, I’ve written on a deadline before when I worked for a paper, but this is a twenty-two chapter piece. I expect some difficulty with it but what fun would it be if it was easy? I want to move it along in a timely fashion for patrons but I don’t want to rush it and have it not be the best it can be. I’m thinking of it as an edited draft, I hope people will show mercy.

I’m also writing a short story that I’ll be posting on Patreon called, The Pact. It’s the story of a mother and daughter and some of the more challenging things presented to them by the pandemic and losing everything. It’s about hard work with little or no reward, dehumanization and the pact they make together that will change everything.

The Tarot Tales are patron only while The Pact will be posted as public, so be on the look-out. In the meantime, enjoy the other rocks in this pond and thank you for your consideration.
